St Piran, the patron saint of miners, is said to have arrived in Cornwall by sea, landing in the sand dunes at Perranporth where he set up an oratory or small chapel. The Oratory, “The Lost Church”, remains in the sand dunes above Perranporth. A model can be viewed in the museum. The keys to the oratory have recently been discovered in the Museum's store.
The area in Perranzabuloe parish has archaeological sites ranging from the Bronze Age to the Second World War.
