Social History

The Cornish Kitchen

Our Cornish kitchen reveals life at home in the early 1900s complete with a Cornish Range, carpet beater and fireside cat!

Drinking water had to be collected from a well or freshwater ‘chute’ and we have a photo of children collecting at Penwartha.

When the circus came to town the school children were allowed time off to see the parade; one remembers being allowed to ride an elephant to his school in Goonhavern.

Music and drama have always been an important part of social life with local and visiting choirs, bands and touring theatre companies.

Display boards and cabinets in the museum show the varied range of social activities in the area, including sports clubs and church and chapel life.
